Echidna On a Loose Leash

The woman in the painting isn’t me. She’s my cherished friend and muse. When I saw the picture of her in that green suit, strutting confidently with a relaxed yet distant expression and sunglasses shading her eyes, I knew I had to paint her. Maybe it’s a bit of me too, I thought. There’s just one thing missing—an echidna. Despite my seeming bravery, there’s always that soft spot, a hidden vulnerability that makes me put up my spines when touched.

Or is it?

Perhaps the echidna is there to say, “I don’t care. I’m an artist, I’m eccentric. You’ve got a dog? Cool. Today, I proudly parade with my echidna.”

“You are walking, and you don’t always realize it, but you’re always falling. With each step, you fall forward slightly and then catch yourself from falling,” says Laurie Anderson in her Big Science album that inspired me while working on this painting.

Catch yourself from falling, even when it seems there is no support and the city appears empty. Keep moving forward, maintaining your stability and momentum.

Catch yourself from falling.

She’s about to step through the doorway into the next chapter of her life: middle age.

I am.

Are you?

It’s an opportune moment for reflection, to glance both backward and forward. Into the unknown.

No fear, no regret, just a brief pause.

Empty Chair

The empty chair symbolises the void left by departed loved ones, serves as a reminder of those dearly missed – parents, friends, family members. This year another empty chair appeared in my life. With this painting I took time to contemplate the time passing and people missing.

One more empty chair.

One more farewell.

My husband, an introverted IT professional, appears shy and reserved in unfamiliar social situations. But when we met in 2017, I sensed there was much more depth beneath his public façade.

Through our marriage I embarked on a fascinating journey, as both a wife and an artist. Layer by layer, he reveals his inner beauty to me — a blend

of strength and vulnerability, quietude and extroversion, adherence to rules and streaks of rebellion. Above all he cherishes his freedom.

Through this painting, I aim to capture the intriguing duality of my masculine, sensitive Aussie husband’s nature.

Plenty of Fish

Plenty of Fish is the name of a dating app. “We are living in the world of plenty”, sings Danny Tenaglia. People are like fish, easy to catch, easy to replace; there’re plenty.

When a relationship is over, let’s celebrate a new one!

I know some people who are loyal. So old-fashioned. My parents are old-fashioned—they tend to fix rather than replace.

We are living in a world of plenty.
